Sunset Sherbet strain: origin, genetics and aroma

Sunset Sherbet strain: origin, genetics and aroma

The Sunset Sherbet strain is an indica-leaning hybrid bred by Mr. Sherbinski from Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties. It is also sold as Sherbet, Sherbert or Sunset Sherbert, and all of these names refer to the same cultivar. The strain database Leafly lists Sunset Sherbert with caryophyllene as the most abundant terpene, followed by limonene and myrcene.

Key facts at a glance, as published by Leafly and AllBud:

  • Parents: Girl Scout Cookies x Pink Panties
  • Breeder: Mr. Sherbinski
  • Type: hybrid, indica-dominant (AllBud lists 85 % indica and 15 % sativa)
  • Most abundant terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene
  • Flowering time: 63 to 72 days, according to Leafly
  • Known offspring: Gelato, Lemon Cherry Gelato

Genetics: parents and breeder

Sunset Sherbet comes from a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties, and the breeder is Mr. Sherbinski. According to Leafly, Mr. Sherbinski bred the strain on purpose to carry the genetic line of Girl Scout Cookies.

Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) is the better-documented parent. Leafly lists it as a cross of OG Kush and F1 Durban. Pink Panties is the second parent. It is less known on its own, and its own lineage is not consistently documented in the public databases.

The cross matters because of what came after it. Sunset Sherbet became a parent strain itself. Leafly lists Gelato as a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. Gelato then became a parent of Runtz and many other modern hybrids. If you follow the Runtz family back two generations, you arrive at Sunset Sherbet.

Sunset Sherbet, Sherbet or Sherbert: one strain, several names

Sunset Sherbet, Sunset Sherbert, Sherbet and Sherbert are names for the same strain. Leafly keeps its entry under "Sherbert (Sunset Sherbert)" and lists Sherbet, Sunset Sherbet and Sunset Sherbert as aliases.

The spelling difference has a simple reason. "Sherbet" is the standard spelling of the frozen dessert. "Sherbert" is a common spoken form in American English. Both spellings appear on dispensary menus, seed listings and strain databases. For this reason, a search for "sherbet strain" and a search for "sunset sherbert strain" usually lead to the same cultivar.

Two names can cause confusion. Blue Sunset Sherbet is a separate cross that uses Sunset Sherbet as a base, and it has its own section below. Sunshine Sherbet and Sunset Sorbet are not aliases in the Leafly entry. If a menu uses one of these names, the lineage should be checked with the grower or breeder.

Is Sunset Sherbet indica or sativa?

Sunset Sherbet is a hybrid with a clear indica lean. Leafly classifies it as a hybrid and describes it as indica-dominant. AllBud gives a more specific split of 85 % indica and 15 % sativa.

The indica lean shows in the plant structure. Indica-leaning plants usually grow shorter and bushier, with broad leaves and dense flowers. Sunset Sherbet follows this pattern. The labels "indica" and "sativa" describe plant shape and lineage. They do not describe how a strain feels, and the percentages in strain databases are estimates, not lab results.

Different breeders and seed banks sell their own versions of Sunset Sherbet. A seed listing from one breeder can show a different indica to sativa ratio than the AllBud entry. The parents, Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties, stay the same in the documented lineage.

What the buds look like

Sunset Sherbet buds are dense, frosty and light to dark green, with orange or amber hairs. AllBud describes large, dense buds shaped like small Christmas trees, in a light minty green. The same entry mentions long, twisted orange hairs and a heavy coat of white trichomes that makes the buds sticky.

Growers quoted on Leafly describe a slightly different picture. They report oblong, fluffy buds with rich trichome coverage and dark amber hairs on light and dark green leaves. Both descriptions agree on the heavy trichome cover. The bud shape varies with the phenotype and the growing conditions.

Some batches show purple tones on the leaves. This colour depends on genetics and on cooler night temperatures in the last weeks of flowering. Purple colour is not a reliable sign of quality or of a specific phenotype.

Aroma and flavour

Sunset Sherbet smells sweet and fruity, with citrus, berry and a peppery base note. Leafly lists citrus, sweet and tropical as the top flavours. Its description mentions a sweet, dessert-like profile with notes of skunky citrus, sweet berry and candy. AllBud lists berry, citrus, fruity, mint and sweet, and it compares the scent to sweet, fruity honey.

The name points to the aroma. The databases describe a sweet, dessert-like top note with a citrus edge, similar to fruit sherbet. Underneath the sweet notes sits a light pepper note. Leafly tags caryophyllene, the most abundant terpene in the profile, with a pepper aroma.

Aroma is not identical from batch to batch. Storage, drying and curing change the smell. A jar that was stored warm or open for a long time loses part of its citrus top notes first.

Terpene profile

The dominant terpene in Sunset Sherbet is caryophyllene, followed by limonene and myrcene. Terpenes are aroma compounds that the plant produces in its trichomes. The same compounds also give the smell to pepper, citrus peel, hops and many herbs.

  • Caryophyllene has a peppery, slightly spicy smell. It is also found in black pepper and cloves.
  • Limonene smells of citrus peel. It is the main aroma compound in lemon and orange peel.
  • Myrcene has an herbal, slightly earthy smell. It is also found in hops, mango and lemongrass.

The order in a strain database is a general guide. A single batch can show a different order. Leafly also lists caryophyllene as the leading terpene of the parent Girl Scout Cookies and of the offspring Gelato and Lemon Cherry Gelato. The peppery base note runs through the whole family.

Blue Sunset Sherbet: how it differs

Blue Sunset Sherbet is a cross that uses Sunset Sherbet as the base, but the second parent is not consistently disclosed. According to a strain guide by JointCommerce, the "Blue" in the name usually points to a Blueberry line or a similar berry-forward parent. Not all breeders publish the full pedigree.

The most visible release, according to JointCommerce, is the feminised "Blue Sunset Sherbert" seed line from Barney's Farm. Other breeders sell their own versions with different parent inputs. For this reason, two products with the name Blue Sunset Sherbet can come from different crosses.

The reported aroma is close to the original, with more berry. The same guide describes a candied orange top note, followed by berry sorbet and creamy vanilla, with a peppery finish. The JointCommerce guide describes it as indica-leaning, like the original.

Related strains: parents and offspring

The closest relatives of Sunset Sherbet are its parent Girl Scout Cookies and its offspring Gelato and Lemon Cherry Gelato. Leafly lists Gelato and Lemon Cherry Gelato as children of Sunset Sherbet. Through Gelato, the line continues into Runtz, which is a cross of Zkittlez and Gelato.
